New World is a new MMORPG launched by Amazon. It’s merely two weeks old, but it already has spawned some controversy, while also attracting a steady fan base.
New World Review
In the game, you’re invited to explore a mystical island where pirates — divided into warring factions — shed blood for control over its territories, economy, and cursed treasures. If Pirates of the Caribbean mixed with WoW has been your weird fantasy — download New World!
By far, New World may be nominated as the most scenic MMORPG, even if compared to Final Fantasy. Its visuals are powered by a true beast — the CryEngine. This is the same engine, which brings the life of Far Cry to life.
So, it’s no wonder why the vast world of the game looks so cinematic. Every biome — be it a nice antiquated hood of one of the cities or a thick forest inhabited with God knows what — bears a tremendous amount of detail. Panoramic views are an optical wonder here.
Sadly, New World on PC feels empty in terms of gameplay. Off the bat, you need to join one of three factions:
- Marauders. A military horde who revere brute force and courage.
- Syndicate. A mixture of Jesuits and Cult of the Damned who practice forbidden magic.
- Covenant. Local goody-two-shoes, who are eager to bring the divine Spark to this macabre island.
The game revolves around these factions fighting to seize control over Aeternum — the mystical island where you start your life from scratch. In the area, which is a domain of your faction, you’re entitled to certain privileges, especially monetary ones.
The world is huge, and you have to traverse it on foot: no mounts are offered. While doing so, you can scavenge for resources, potion ingredients, partake in side quests, and engage in PvP battles.
Competition among factions is pretty high, by the way. Odds are, a buccaneer from a rival team will attack you upon sight. Or at least spew some trash talk. Although, diplomacy also exists here.
We expect cinematic battles with the raid bosses to arrive later, as well challenges and campaigns, of which there aren’t too many at the moment. And also be warned: there have been numerous complaints that the game can wreck your graphic card.
So far, it’s too early to judge whether the game is a long-term relationship or just a one-evening-stand with a cup of cider. From the visual point of view, it’s more than astonishing. Optically and haptically, Aeternum is a marvel to explore.
At the same time, the game feels empty. Even if you consider the multitudes of all possible hostels that inhabit this esoteric place.
New World is one of the most discussed games at the moment. It has a rich potential of becoming an alternative to WoW and Genshin Impact. But not until it rolls out events and fixes that weird issue, which destroys GPUs.
And since there’s no New World free download — it costs $40 — we’d better wait until all problems get fixed.
- Beautiful in-game world
- An interesting setting
- Subtle balance of brute force, economics and strategy.
- Lack of content
- No mounts
- GPU issue.
